The Oryx Trail Lodge calls the Ga-Segonyana district in the Northern Cape home. Water, mountains and dense vegetation make the beautiful green town of Kuruman, situated in the Kuruman Valley, a treasure for the tourist and a jewel for its residents.

Oasis
This lush town is the main centre of the Kalahari region, and is fittingly known as the "Oasis of the Kalahari". The town is blessed with a permanent water source, the Ga Segonyana (or little water calabash). “Die Oog”, as it is commonly referred to by locals, delivers 20 million liters of crystal clear water daily to its approximately 10 000 inhabitants.

History
Robert Moffat, a Scottish missionary, lived here for fifty years (1820-1870) and built the historic Moffat church (completed in 1838). This church still exists and regular services are still conducted. Interestingly enough Moffat was also the first person to translate the Bible into the local African language Setswana.

Industry
Mining and agricultural activities (cattle and game) support Kuruman's thriving economy. Various minerals are mined in the area like manganese ore, iron ore and tiger's eye. The richest deposits of iron ore are found in the Kuruman district hence the success of local mining company Kumba Iron Ore.

Today
Kuruman is well on its way to establishing itself as one of the major hunting areas in South Africa making it a popular tourist destination for international travelers.

Visit
Kuruman is situated on a main route between Gauteng and Namibia/Cape Town via Upington. The area boasts a wide variety of fascinating tourist attractions to be discovered en route. Unspoilt nature and plenty of tourist stops along the way have seen this route continue to grow in popularity.
